ESOF 2010

ESOF - Euroscience Open Forum is a meeting dedicated to research, innovation, science communication and science policy, which takes place every two years in a major European city. ESOF was designed by Euroscience (www.euroscience.org), an association which represents experts in all disciplines, including the social sciences and the humanities. The 2010 edition has been awarded to Torino, Italy. From 2 to 7 July 2010 Torino will be the European City of Science, hosting a wide array of events.

ESOF2010 will feature four main programmes: a core Scientific Programme, hosted in the Lingotto Conference Centre, with panels, workshops and keynote lectures by major international personalities, including Nobel Prizes. The Scientific Committee has chosen ten main themes for the focus of discussion for this edition:
  • Sustainable living and moving
  • Evolution, development and adaptation of organisms
  • Moving into and up from our quantum world
  • Responding to global needs
  • Frontiers in energy research
  • Science, knowledge, and belief
  • Memory and learning in organisms, social and artificial systems
  • Languages, cultures, and variability
  • Integrating science with health care
  • Policies – what follows?
The Science in the City programme will set the city centre in motion, hosting exhibits, meetings and various forms of entertainment for the general public. Streets and squares will be brought to life until late in the evening.

The Career Programme is made up of a series of events dedicated to young researchers, who will be given an important opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and experiences, and to learn about the different international career opportunities open to them in both the academic and industrial world. Thanks to the Pizza with the Prof event, young people will be able to meet important figures from the world of research face to face. The brand new event Science Speed Dating provides for a series of relaxed and brief interviews to match supply and demand, thus facilitating the exchange of ideas between young researchers and institutions, between those with new ideas and those who might be able to put them to practical use.

In the Science to Business programme, ESOF2010 will offer a series of appointments dedicated to business and potential entrepreneurs, with events that deal with themes regarding applied research and opportunities for development of new highly innovative businesses – with a special focus on Torino’s fields of excellence.

Thanks to the Science to Media, a specific agenda will be dedicated to the debate on science communication, with meeting between journalists, researchers and scientific personalities attending ESOF2010. Lingotto Fiere, on the other hand, will host the Exhibition, a showcase on science and technology dedicated to research centres, universities, public and private enterprises and communication agencies.

Even those who cannot attend ESOF2010 in person will have the chance to take an active part in the event. WebESOF will provide the opportunity to follow the conferences in real time, download material and share video lectures and lab activities.
