World Federation of
Science Journalists

Social Program

Monday, October 4th - 5 pm to 8 pm
Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception

Come help us launch the Conference by joining the organizers and partners at the Opening Ceremony, in the ballroom of the Marriott Château Champlain. Senior representatives of both the federal and provincial governments will set the scene with news about research initiatives in emerging science.

Canada Post will be on-hand to unveil two new stamps featuring Canadian Nobel Prize winners. The L'OREAL-UNESCO Prizes for Women in Science will also be presented to two Canadian researchers. In addition, two previous winners from Venezuela and Lebanon will join in the Ceremony. Official presentations will be followed by a Welcome Reception in the Café Conc room, in the lower lobby of the hotel. Food and drinks will be served.

Tuesday, October 5th - 6 pm to 8 pm
Reception at Montréal Science Centre

All participants are invited to attend a cocktail reception held at the Montréal Science Centre in honour of the 4th World Conference of Science Journalists. Don't miss this opportunity to visit one of Canada's most renowned science museums and meet fellow science journalists.

Also, since the WCSJ will be held at the time of year when both the Nobel prizes and the Ig Nobel prizes are announced, we will have a mini-celebration of these events, focusing on the Ig Nobel Prizes, which honor achievements that "first make people LAUGH, and then make them THINK."

Our celebration will be hosted by a genuine Ig Nobel Prize winning scientist, who is Canadian. Best of all, he will present to us a brand new (2004!) Ig winner, also from Canada, who will be making his very first public appearance just days after receiving his prize.

Buses will be available at the hotel to take participants to the venue.

Wednesday, October 6th - 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
IDRC Cocktail Reception

Delegates from developing countries and countries in transition are cordially invited to a cocktail reception hosted by the International Development Research Centre in room Viger "C". This event will provide attendees with an opportunity to meet and exchange with colleagues and IDRC officials in a cordial and relaxed atmosphere.

Thursday, October 7th - 5 pm to 7 pm
Farewell Cocktail

Before leaving the Conference, join us for a last farewell in the Café Conc room of the Marriott Château Champlain. Together, we will raise our glass to this year's Conference and the one to come.
