Dr. Hellard conducts research on the epidemiology of blood-borne viruses (HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C) and sexually transmitted infections and the impact of these infections in vulnerable populations. Her research has led to revisions in the education plans and policies on HCV prevention and clinical management of people who inject drugs infected with HCV in Australia and globally. As well her work has been instrumental in the development of innovative sentinel surveillance systems for blood borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Margaret has published more than 250 peer reviewed articles. She has been a member of numerous advisory committees and working groups including the WHO Working Group on Viral Hepatitis Elimination and the Advisory Group for WHO Guidelines for Viral Hepatitis Screening. She led the team that undertook the literature reviews for the 1st WHO Guidelines on Hepatitis C Screening, Care and Treatment.
