Director of Communications and Outreach

Executive Overview

This is an exciting time to be working at the American Geophysical Union (AGU). Our members work on some of the most pressing issues facing humanity: climate change, renewable clean energy, and meeting the challenges of natural hazards. As science regains the forefront in government funding and policymaking, we are making changes of our own, transitioning to new executive leadership.

As our Director of Communications and Outreach your role is both highly visible and strategically significant. You will be encouraged to envision ways to raise our profile and impact - to rethink and reshape our communications, public affairs, education and outreach activities from first principles, identifying priorities and points of leverage. You will report to the Executive Director, control a budget of $1.2 million, manage a team of 6 professionals, and be an integral part of our senior leadership team.

Your primary areas of focus will be media relations, public outreach, governmental affairs, and supporting the professional development needs of the next generation of scientists. In this role you will work closely with our Development team and several Board committees including: the Committee on Public Affairs (COPA), the Committee on Education and Human Resources (CEHR), and the Public Information Committee (PIC). Your initial focus will be to collaborate and engage with AGU leadership and the relevant committee chairs and members to define the structure and priorities of your department.

The core strength of AGU is our 50,000 scientist members. The scientists and their enormous archive of peer-reviewed science fundamentally define AGU - this is where AGU’s credentials and influence originate. Working here, you will connect science to people, translating and communicating the information from our scientific publications to a variety of audiences: politicians, education, media, the public, industry, and our members.
