Senior Editor at The American Ceramic Society

The American Ceramic Society serves the informational, educational, and professional needs of the international ceramics community. The Society membership includes more than 8,500 scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, plant personnel, educators and students, marketing and sales professionals from more than 60 countries. ACerS provides members and subscribers access to periodicals and books, meetings and expositions, and online technical information. In addition, ACerS’ journals are the most cited ceramic publications in the world. Founded in 1898, the Society provides education and forums to connect individuals working in ceramics-related materials in order to better advance the ceramics community.

For immediate full-time employment, we are seeking a Senior Editor to write, acquire, initiate, prepare and/or copyedit content to be used in ACerS media projects including the Bulletin (a leading technical publication serving the world-wide advanced ceramics marketplace), the Ceramic Tech Today blog, and special print, online and email initiatives. Strong growth potential exists for the right candidate in this position.
  • Write, acquire, initiate, produce, rewrite/edit and/or copyedit for the Bulletin, the Ceramic Tech Today blog and other media projects, with particular attention paid to compiling and composing content, overseeing prepress and prepublication production and ensuring editorial/production deadlines are met.
  • Check facts and copyright clearances for all content; edit/rewrite and proof features as assigned; coordinate corrections for all copy; monitor and maintain editorial style.
  • Coordinate with Graphics/Production staff on final page, web, blog and other media regarding graphics and appearance, as needed, to ensure established design criteria are met.
  • Administer interdepartmental procedures and maintain appropriate records for all material related to the Bulletin, the Ceramic Tech Today blog, other media projects and emails.
  • Assist Communications Director with other editorial projects as needed.
Position Requirements:
  • Strong writing, reporting, editing and proofreading skills; thorough knowledge of digital print and multimedia production and publishing process; detail oriented and able to meet deadlines; good oral and written communication skills.
  • Shows initiative in covering and uncovering stories, and is able to identify and adapt to new communications opportunities and strategies.
  • Minimum of seven years' editorial and publishing experience related to science and technology. Some experience requirement may be waived depending on strength of connection to science and technology. Working knowledge of AP style.
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, engineering or related field. Demonstrated multiyear technical competency will be considered in place of Bachelor's degree. Journalism or English major preferred.
  • Strong understanding of business or research institutions a plus.
  • Experience with Indesign, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, WordPress (or similar online publishing systems) and video editing software preferred.
